LIONS MANE

LION'S MANE

AND FUNCTIONAL MUSHROOMS

Here at My Exotic Fruit, we’re constantly looking for new trends in food and one that seems here to stay is ‘functional mushrooms’.

What is a ‘functional mushroom’?

A functional mushroom is a mushroom that is believed to have health benefits beyond
basic nutrition.

Though many know them for
their part in traditional Chinese medicine, indigenous cultures all over the world have made use of them for more than 2000 years.

Many believe that functional mushrooms alleviate an array of medical conditions, from heart health and type 2 diabetes to allergies and even cancer.

Their benefits even extend to the brain, with claims that they offer better focus, mood, memory and sleep to anyone who consumes them.

The boom in interest for mushrooms has led shops to invest in a range of products, from supplements and gummies to soft drinks, teas and even coffees.

Black Sheep Coffee in the UK were the first chain to release a Lion’s Mane coffee in January of 2025.

The most popular – Lion’s Mane

Of all the functional mushrooms, including Maitake, Reishi, Shitake and Turkey Tail, Lion’s Mane is by far the most popular, deemed the ‘poster child’ for the functional mushroom movement.

Also known as Hericium Erinaceus, this mushroom is everywhere from soft drinks to baked goods and is one of the most sought-after mushrooms for Holland & Barret.

Lion’s mane grows on the trunks of dead hardwood trees across North America, Asia and Europe and is so rare that they are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of 1981, meaning that it is illegal to collect them in the wild.

Almost other-worldly in appearance, Lion’s Mane has a snow-white shaggy flesh that resembles its namesake. That’s right – the mane of a lion.

They have a soft, tender consistency and a sweet, almost nutty flavour that adds a delicious earthiness to dishes. Grill, pan-fry or add to soups, stir fries and pasta dishes. Or, if you’re looking for a unique vegetarian alternative,
fry them like a steak!

Lion’s Mane is an extremely versatile mushroom that can be used however you desire – just look at Black Sheep’s coffee!

Why are they so popular?

What are the benefits?

Lion’s Mane may taste great, but that’s only half the reason why they’re so popular.

Used for centuries by Buddhist
monks to aid relaxation, studies are ongoing into its supposed benefits, including alleviation of anxiety and inflammation as well as promoting
an increased immunity and memory. They’re packed with protein, essential nutrients and antioxidants and are low in calories and salt.

How can you get your hands on some?

Now that you know how great Lion’s Mane is, not only for creating new
and exciting dishes, but also for your health, you’ll want to know where you can find some.
